Landscaping changes your awareness.

Writer's picture: YoheiYohei

Imagine that there are two garden beds, one on either side of the sidewalk.

The one on the left is clean and tidy. I never see leaves and trash on the flower bed. You can see easily that the garden bed is often maintained in good order. On the other side, the flower bed is a mess of litter, fallen leaves, and dog waste, even though there is a sign about cleaning up dog waste.

That's what jumped out the other day while I was walking around town. That got me thinking about why things turned out this way.

One thing popped into my head. The thing is people's awareness. The dog owners would clean up if the dog pooped on the clean side of the garden beds. This is because If they leave their dog's waste in the clean flower bed, it's easy to get caught not taking care of it. Also, I thought that because there was not a single piece of trash in the flower beds, it would raise awareness of the need to keep them clean.

On the other side, the awareness of the need to keep the gardens clean would wear off because everyone litters and breaks the rules of dog waste stealthily. It would be increasingly obvious that littering and leaving dog waste is the norm, like a chain-reaction. Such a small thing would spoil not only the landscape but also lower people's morale.

You could say that keeping gardens clean and tidy is just one of the occupational values of landscaping jobs. The point is a good or bad environment affects people's awareness of how to live in the environment. Keeping your garden or public space clean and tidy raises awareness of cleanliness.
